THE OBJECTIVES
The CHESS RULES AUSTRALIA programs and syllabus are designed to create an attitude to life as much as to teach people how to play chess. We use analogy to real life and historical reference to give a deeper meaning to the game.
Chess underscores and reinforces many lofty ideals that help children (everybody) to lead better more organized lives and a more strategic well planned existence. The incorporation of History and Art practice will stimulate creativity and lateral thought processes.
CHESS RULES AUSTRALIA’s major objective, is to help children of all ages to cope better with life. Helping people to better organise and structure their lives is our fundamental motivation. Teaching people the noble art of Chess is the conduit.
CHESS RULES AUSTRALIA is always developing new and interesting chess related programs to inspire people of all ages to learn and play this ancient and noble game. These programs represent a whole new era in chess tuition that incorporates life skills, organisation and common goals. All our programs can be tailored to fit the school curriculum or as ‘stand alone’ extra-curricular activities.
SYLLABUS, STRATEGIES
AND CHAMPIONS
Using the syllabus provided to introduce them to standard moves and strategies such as Take for nothing, Forks, Skewers, Pins etc. followed by playing games against each other. This element has a structured syllabus that will be introduced throughout the school term.
Chess notation will be introduced and also stories about famous champions and great games throughout history (such as Capablanca, Anderssen & Fischer) will be told to the children to inspire them. The strategies and tournament structure will be explained and those students who excel will be encouraged to participate and will be coached for entry into the national competition chess tournament circuit.
THE HISTORY OF CHESS
Great battles have created changes to societies throughout the ages that have directly influenced our lives today. Students will be encouraged to research and tell stories about famous/infamous battles that changed history as well as tactics used by the generals and leaders responsible for the battle’s success or failure as they relate to chess movement.
Reinforcement of the basic strategies and tenets occurs during the whole course with the use of analogy and historic reference from the likes of Sunzi and Macchiavelli. This program represents a philosophical examination of strategy for use in real life situations. For example ‘poor decisions made by generals have turned certain victory to defeat’ clearly impresses the need for caution and initiative.
PHILOSOPHY OF CHESS
We examine how the Queen came to be and how her inclusion in the game reflected the growing social and political power of women throughout history.
Chess is a social pastime and has socio/political implications for children's social developement, social skills, awareness and interactions.
Teaching chess incorporates age old concepts of chivalry, nobility of spirit, ettiquette, good sportsman/womanship and diplomacy. Chess Rules Australia hopes to instill all of these ideals in the children who join our chess clubs.
